Winning Vision

Introduction

Party on the square opening spectacular - 24th March

I clearly remember my first impression of Old Market Square when I came to live in Nottingham. I thought "Wow, impressive" and it made me feel very positive about moving here.

In the 17 years I've been a Councillor I've been coming into the Square several days a week; I see it early in the morning and late at night. Over that time the city centre has become busier and caters for many more uses. Nottingham now has so much more going on that it's clear that the Square needs a revamp.

That's why we took the decision to hold Square One, the international competition to come up with a new vision for Old Market Square.

I think the winning design by Gustafson Porter is classy and classic and not something too trendy that won't stand the test of time. Kids growing up today will live with any new design for a lifetime so it's vital not to make a mistake at this stage. We're consulting with local people and representatives of local businesses so that any decision to take the winning design forward will be made with Councillors having a good understanding of what the public response to the design has been.

We have a once in a lifetime opportunity to redefine the very heart of Nottingham, to create a new signature for the city. It’s an immensely exciting transformation and I hope you’ll enjoy following the projects progress as keenly as I will. We will be doing our very best to keep the disruption of building work to minimum and we’re asking the city’s businesses and residents to bear with us while we strive to deliver an impressive new Square symbolic of our future vision for Nottingham.
