Safety
Safety is a major area that we want to get right. The Square during the evening is not currently the most widely used space in the city centre. We want to change this. The proposed design is intended to help the Square become active and safe even when empty and, when full of people, to appear spacious and calm.
South Parade will be an area where one can sit on the terraced steps and take in the surroundings or wait to meet friends. At night there will be a stunning lighting scheme for the Square. Four lighting masts along South Parade will cast ambient lighting across the Square creating a safe and attractive atmosphere.
Appropriate measures will be put into place to make sure that through all seasons the Square is kept clean and safe for visitors. The water features can be turned off in extreme weather conditions to prevent icing.
